Pros and Cons of Winter Roof Repair and Replacement

You may be wondering about the state of your roof and debating if you should have repairs or a replacement performed during the winter months. Like any type of repair there are pros and cons to winter roof repairs and replacement.

PROS:

  • Pricing/Availability: Summer’s warm and predictable weather makes it the busiest season for most roofing companies. Colder months mean roofers typically have less work to do. You will likely find that their availability will easily fit your schedule and they may even offer off-season pricing.

  • Prevents small problems from becoming bigger problems: A small roofing problem can quickly become a catastrophic issue, which is why sometimes it does not pay to wait for warmer weather. Ice build ups are often a red flag that your home is losing heat and cracked, curling, or otherwise corrupted shingles can let moisture penetrate your roof. By correcting small repairs immediately you can greatly reduce your chances of being stuck with a serious problem come springtime.

  • Reduce heating bills:  Damaged shingles and leaks are both indicators that your roof is letting a portion of your home’s heat escape. Roof repairs will ensure your home is properly sealed, thus reducing your heating bills.

  • Prepared for spring storms:  Winter rains and melting snow or ice can seep into a damaged roof, but the spring rainy season is just around the corner. By having roof repairs done now, you will be prepared for upcoming spring showers.

  • CONS:

    • Material problems and project delays: While it’s usually cheaper to get your roof fixed in the winter, it might also take longer. Asphalt shingles not only require a specific temperature range for their adhesives to seal properly, they are also prone to cracking in cold weather. These situations mean that even if your roofing project is moving along smoothly, a sudden drop in temperature can cause a delay in your roofing project.

    • More dangerous for roofers: Even the most nimble footed roofer needs to take extra care when they are on a roof covered with snow and ice. Often they will need to wait for a few warm days to melt the ice and create safer conditions.

    • Unpredictable weather conditions:  Even the most carefully planned roofing project can be thrown off track when unexpected weather conditions arise.

    • “By having roof repairs done now, you will be prepared for upcoming spring showers.”
