Prepare Your Roof for Fall Weather

Regular roof maintenance is crucial for protecting your family, your belongings, and your budget. With fall just around the corner, winter weather isn’t far behind—take time today to prepare your roof, before the severe weather arrives.

Exterior Physical Inspection

Grab a pair of binoculars and take a walk around your home to visually inspect your roof for signs of damage and deterioration. Scan the surface for missing, cracked, or curled shingles. Also check leak prone areas such as vent stacks, chimneys, and skylights for damaged flashing, cracks, and gaps. Make sure your roof is also moss-free. Moss can trap moisture (leading to shingle corrosion and wood rot), lift shingles, and it just plain looks bad!

Gutters and Downspouts

A gutter system full of leaves and debris will lead to clogs and overflowing gutters which can then damage your roof, trim, and siding. The weight of the wet leaves can also cause your gutters to pull loose from the anchor points or collapse. Clean your gutters and consider adding guards to prevent future debris collection. Check to see where your downspouts are draining. Be sure to route them downhill away from your home’s foundation.

Attic Ventilation and Insulation

You may think you need your attic to be air tight, but lack of adequate airflow can actually cause problems. When sunlight hits your roof and heats up your attic, condensation will form and cause moisture damage (possibly mold and rot) if you do not have vents located at the ridges, soffits, and/or gables of your roof. You should also analyze if you need any upgrades to your insulation.

Interior Home Inspection

Look around the inside of you home for any signs of roofing problems. On a sunny day, check for water spots on ceilings and walls. On a rainy day, look closely for any leaks (no matter how small)!
