Protect Your Roof from Spring Storm Damage

Spring is here! Is your home properly protected against this season’s rain, hail, and wind storms? As your home’s first line of defense, it is important to check your roof today—after winter storms have hit but before spring storms arrive. Performing this inspection will help you find minor damage (if present) before it evolves into extensive (and expensive) repairs.

Perform Your Own Preliminary Inspections

  • Indoor:One of the easiest ways to check for a roof leak is to listen and look for dripping in your attic when it is raining. You can also check your attic’s floors, ceiling, and rafters for moisture marks, discolorations, stains, and peeling paint. While you are in your attic, you should also inspect areas around venting and chimneys. Also, check your attic’s insulation for signs of mildew. Other signs of a roof leak that you might notice on the inside of your home is a musty smell and/or stains or “bubbles” on ceilings and walls.
  • Outdoor:To prevent personal injury and further roof damage, climbing onto your roof is not recommended. Instead, perform a visual inspection of your roof (ideally with a pair of binoculars) looking for missing, buckling, curling, or blistering shingles. Also, look for damage to your chimney, skylights, ventilation pipes, flashing, and gutters. Look for water stains or spots on your home’s exterior walls, around the gutters, and under the eaves.

Schedule a Professional Inspection

You can perform your own inspections but you should have your roof inspected by a professional on a regular basis. Spring is the perfect time for this! A trained professional can spot the signs of roof damage early and offer solutions for repairs or a roof replacement before spring storms strike.

Immediately Schedule Repairs

If your roof is damaged in any way it is crucial that you schedule repairs to be performed before spring’s thunderstorms, strong winds, pelting rains, and hail arrive. Ignored or delayed repairs will likely result in costlier repairs and could lead to complete roof replacement.
